Bloomfield was platted and designated as the seat of Davis County in 1844. Its location at the geographic center of the county fulfilled the ideal of a county seat's being equidistant from all locales. In Bloomfield's situation on “dry rolling prairie with plenty of timber within convenient distance,” as noted by Andreas, in its grid plan with a central public square for the post office, and in its preservation of late nineteenth-century architecture, the community beautifully characterizes the image one usually entertains of Iowa.
