One of the earliest commercial commissions of MacKie and Kamrath after they began practice in 1937 was this dental clinic for Dr. Ben F. Ammons. It exhibits a modernistic residue that they would purge from their architecture as Frank Lloyd Wright's influence on Karl Kamrath increased. The panel of split-faced ledgestone facing De Fee Avenue and the incorporation of planting slots and troughs indicate Kamrath's developing attraction to Wright's organic architecture.
At 220 W. De Fee is the former U.S. Post Office (now the Baytown Historical Museum) of 1936 by Louis A. Simon, Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury. Two blocks farther west, at 304 N. Pruett Street, is a cross-axial thoroughfare staked with large churches. The most imposing is the limestone-faced, neo-Gothic Grace United Methodist Church of 1949 by Ernest L. Shult of Houston with additions of 1955 by Daniel Perkins.
