Challenging the Hill Building ( BE21) for architectural prominence on this block of Commerce Street is an equally forceful display of ornamental brick detail. Here, the San Antonian contrast of red brick with a buff brick field is exploited in thin panels beneath second-floor windows, decorative vertical piers that alternate rhythmically across the Commerce and 5th streets facades, arched molds above the second-floor windows, and parapet-level corbeling.
