One of the more interesting of Phelps's eleven county courthouses in Texas ( CJ17, CJ21), this is his best Moderne courthouse. The use of vertical brick pilasters to divide the rectangular mass of the structure, coupled with the striking contrast between the orange brick and white stone trim, makes for an effective public building on the exterior.

Across the street to the west is the First Methodist Church of 1906, a blend of shingled gables and tower with round-arched white-painted brick walls.
