One of the most distinctive rural courthouses in Texas, this Mission Revival design is Phelps's most important work. Phelps made liberal use of the famed Alamo motif above the main entrances and the four corner towers. The deep porches on the first level block the harsh Texas sun. The interior, which has been restored, is rather undistinguished when compared to the exterior. The courthouse was rehabilitated in 2003 by Fisher Heck Architects with funding from the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program.
