The construction date of Dr. L. W. Chilton's house is significant: on May 18, 1902, a tornado cut through Goliad killing at least 115 people (approximately 10 percent of the population) and destroying one hundred buildings. Chilton replaced his wrecked ten-year-old house with this splendid wood house by Leffland. The plan—an L-front arrangement with chamfered bays at either end of the south and east elevations connected by a gallery—is familiar from Leffland's larger houses in Victoria ( VI23). The gallery here is one story high, giving Leffland the opportunity to pop out second-story porches at intervals, most ebulliently where the facade turns the corner and the corner tower is crowned by a wedge-shaped roof.
