Michigan architect Birkerts designed this parallelogram-planned building to deflect the curve of Mies's Brown Pavilion across the street ( HN7). The museum's sharply pointed Montrose corner and its reflective, stainless steel–panel wall system give Houston's second-oldest art museum a distinctive identity in a precinct otherwise dominated by the Museum of Fine Arts and its appendages.
