Shotgun Cottages

“The Quarters,” extending from W. Huisache to W. Caesar avenues in the southwest quadrant of Kingsville, was a twenty-block area designated for African Americans. Conveniently located next to the railroad yards—a primary source for African American employment—construction in this sector, including these altered cottages, was also managed by the Kleberg Town and Improvement Company. The remodeled Frederick Douglass School (1948), another relic of segregation, still stands in the 900 block of S. 3rd Street.
