Sited on a narrower than typical lot, the Stevens residence demonstrates the popularity of the Italianate style, as evidenced by the bracketed roof. The three-sided projecting bay, with its round-arched windows and the front door set back under its small porch, creates a narrow, asymmetrical front. Holding many important positions in the city, San Antonio native John Stevens is mainly remembered as the postmaster of San Antonio.
The Charles Hummel House (1884) next door at number 309 uses similar stone and woodworking details. Particular care was taken in the dressing of the limestone blocks on the quoins of the projecting bay. Hummel was a dealer in firearms and sporting goods.
