Anchoring the area north of the city center that was developed during San Antonio's Gilded Age of the decades 1890–1930, broad Kings Highway is the most impressive street within the Monte Vista neighborhood. The “Avenue of the Cattle Barons” was patterned after the famous grand avenues most often associated with St. Louis, where the houses were sited on deep setbacks to provide uniformly sized front yards. Locally, it presents a collection of thirty-five large-scale residences designed by many of the city's most important architects.
