This community, built along the old market road to Wickford (which was famous for being ten rods wide), is typical of southern Rhode Island's highly paternalistic mill towns. Robert Rodman, a relative of the Hazard family of mill owners (see Peace Dale under South Kingstown), purchased the site in 1847 for woolen manufacture. His descendants owned and operated the company until 1962.
