Covering 640 acres Terrell Hills is the largest of the autonomous, incorporated areas on the north side of the city. Development began in the first decade of the twentieth century as a country estate section, although extensive residential construction did not begin until the 1920s and it did not fill until well after World War II. The plan of Terrell Hills is more regular than that of Olmos Park and Alamo Heights, with streets following a grid plan with a few irregularities. Terrell Hills was incorporated in 1957 when it joined the Alamo Heights Independent School District.
