Barbour County, formed in 1843 from portions of Harrison, Lewis, and Randolph counties, was named for Philip Pendleton Barbour, U.S. Supreme Court justice from Virginia. Agriculture, especially livestock, has always been a mainstay in the economy of this essentially rural county, which counted a 2000 population of 15,557.
