Designed by Anchorage architects, the first three-story bunkhouse was constructed in 1938. The stairway of the 24-foot-by-63-foot building is enclosed, with its own gable roof on the south end of the building. The first floor contained a bathroom, drying room, recreation room equipped with pool table and barber chair, library, nurses' station, and one bedroom. The second and third floors had double-loaded corridors with six two-man bedrooms on each side.
