Similar height, massing, and styling characterize these nine three-story apartment buildings. The 1931 Robert Frost and Louisa May Alcott Apartments use terracotta surrounds for visual interest in eclectic edifices. Subsequent constructions reflect Art Deco influence in vertical brick piers and heavy use of terracotta spandrels and door surrounds, or favor Art Moderne touches that include contrasting horizontal brick banding and rounded corners. Charles Strong, who organized citywide cooperatives and bartering arrangements during the Great Depression, is better remembered as a social activist than as an architect.
