Rock construction attained its apotheosis in Alpine at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, a twin-towered, idiosyncratic Gothic Revival design. The multicolored, randomly sized stonework from local quarries was a favorite material in Alpine. Towers bracket the facade with its pointed arches outlined in white stone for the entrance, an upper niche with a Mary and Child statue, and three crenellation-like arches forming the gable.
Alpine south of the railroad tracks historically was the town’s “Mexican” neighborhood. The side-gabled, adobe-built double house at the northeast corner of S. 5th Street and E. Avenue F exemplifies the most representative Mexican vernacular house type of the Big Bend adobe belt.
