J. A. Walker House

Two neighboring houses, this house (701) and the R. B. Rogers House (1905) at 707 Center, share similar floor plans, are built of tan brick, and exhibit Colonial Revival features, though the front porches are slightly different, as are the third-floor dormers. Walker founded a wholesale grocery business and was instrumental in the founding of Howard Payne University. R. B. Rogers owned several dry goods stores in the area and bought the lot for this house from Walker. David Stanley restored the Rogers House in 2013, along with a chicken coop and a servants’ house at the rear of the property, structures that provide a picture of early-twentieth-century life for Brownwood’s wealthier residents.
