Del Rio National Bank Building

-A A +A
1911, Alfred Giles, with Herbert S. Green. 701 S. Main St.

Giles of San Antonio and his associate, Green, designed this two-story brick classically influenced building, with a curved corner entrance framed by clustered Tuscan pilasters. These support a frieze, a dentil-lined cornice, and a parapet crowned by a cartouche above the entrance.

South Main Street retains its architectural character as the retail axis of downtown Del Rio, although many buildings are now untenanted. On this 700 block the three-story S. H. Kress Company Building (1928, E. J. Hoffman), the modernist Paul Poag Theater (former Rita Theater) of 1941 by Jack Corgan, and the two-story Montgomery Ward Company building (1929) at 720, 746, and 753 S. Main, respectively, are architectural standouts.
