Cathedral Parochial School

-A A +A
1954, Benjamin P. Ritzert. 324 Abercorn St.

The compact horizontality of this modernist building’s tight assemblage of boxes and planes contrasts with the Gothic verticality of the cathedral across the street. Even so, the school clearly echoes the church in its color palette and the relief portraying Our Lady of Grace over the glass entrance, which repeats the church’s southern entrance portal dedicated to the Virgin Mary as “Regina Coeli” (Queen of Heaven). Savannah architect Ritzert’s careful use of glass block, aluminum sun screens, and outdoor walkways makes this a sophisticated, regionally specific functionalist composition.
