A notable example of adaptive reuse, this expansive single-story brick-faced light-industrial building is now a warehouse and mill that salvages and recycles historic lumber from demolished buildings. Large metal-sash windows and an exposed truss, sawtooth roof allow daylight into this former dry cleaner, which later became part of a complex that served as a beer garden. The nearby Daniel Flagg Villas (before 1916; 2004 restoration, Lominack Kolman Smith Architects) at E. 34th and East Broad streets, a colorful ensemble of historic railroad cottages, were rehabilitated as permanent housing for persons with HIV/AIDS and their families by the Union Mission’s Phoenix Housing program, through a collaboration with city, state, and federal agencies.
