Brookhaven’s Jews, who formed a small but significant minority, included the R. T. Scherck family, owners of the Inez Hotel, and three mayors serving between the 1890s and the 1970s. This temple has an off-center square front tower and such Moorish features as an ogee-shaped roof on the tower and horseshoe-arched windows. Wooden shingles fill the front gable, and the tower is elaborated with decorative woodwork. Having dwindled in numbers, the congregation donated the building to the Lincoln County Historical and Genealogical Society in 2009.
Across the corner at 300 S. Church is the two-story Moderne Brookhaven Elementary School (1941; R. W. Naef) built with WPA funding. A tall entrance portico is off-center, and circular windows illuminate the end stair tower. The front-faceted auditorium shown in the original renderings was only added in 1956.
Nearby at 220 S. Jackson, the Gothic Revival First Presbyterian Church (1906) bristles with four corner towers and pinnacles, and two Tudor-arched porches lead into the auditorium-plan sanctuary with curved seating.
