This fourteen-story modernist bank towers 215 feet above the Governor’s Mansion (JM18) across the street. Set on a recessed granite base, it presents to Capitol Street a limestone facade with small deeply set windows, while on West Street, long ribbon windows alternate with brick. A connected parking garage provided the new amenity of self-parking. At the top of the building, a butterfly-shaped screen surrounds the mechanical equipment.
At 210 E. Capitol, adjacent to the former Merchants Bank (see JM29), the Regions Plaza Building (1975, John L. Turner and Associates) still holds pride of place as Jackson’s tallest building at 316 feet and 22 stories; it is connected to the Marriott Hotel by the city’s first skyway. On the next block at 190 E. Capitol is Jackson’s first skyscraper in several decades. The nine-story, glass-curtain-wall Pinnacle Building by Dale and Associates, with WRT Design, opened in 2009 as Mississippi’s first LEED Gold-certified office building.
