Florence's founder, James McCandless, constructed this three-story red brick structure, distinguished by an intact storefront with recessed entrances between cast iron pillars from the Riverside Ironworks of Kansas City. Above a full-width clerestory, upper floors contain a two-story interior atrium with a third-story balcony. This commercial building has housed various businesses, including a hotel. It belongs to a block of fine commercial buildings, among them the prototypical corner First National Bank (c. 1900), with its entry flanked by fluted columns and Greek classical detailing.
