Bouton House

-A A +A
1895, Harlan Thomas. 183 N. Sherwood St. (NR)

One of the handsomest domiciles in town, this two-and-one-half-story balloon-frame house has beautiful proportions and Colonial Revival details. Jay H. Bouton (or Boughton), an attorney, businessman, judge, and politician, spearheaded the cultural crusade to erect the Opera House ( LR01.2). The ground-floor wrap-around veranda features decorative urn finials on its baluster railing. The second floor overhangs the first, and the roof is a complex combination of hip and gable elements incorporating third-story overhanging front gables with Palladian windows. A barn and a root cellar survive in back.
