Edison School

-A A +A
1909, J. M. Gile. 1923, 1952, additions. 1110–1130 Russ Ave. (northeast corner of E. Mesa Ave.) (NR)

The six Edison School structures, initially designed as cubical units connected by breezeways, are vaguely Italianate. Gathered around a handsome, twin-towered Italian Villa Style main building, this complex of one-story, hip-roofed structures in blond brick was based on the concept of the “Pueblo unit schoolhouse,” developed by school board member Dr. Richard W. Corwin. In a typical Progressive-era experiment with improving public buildings, Dr. Corwin specified high windows on three sides of each detached unit, allowing good ventilation and diffuse lighting to eliminate “objectionable reflections or cross-lights.”
