St. Anthony's Catholic Church

One of the raunchiest towns in Colorado, Julesburg needed religion. After first meeting in the UP section house, Catholics built a church of rough-faced cast stone, then replaced it forty years later with this building. The vernacular brick church combines lancet windows with a half-timbered entry portico and front gable. John Monroe, a Denver architect and assistant of Jacques Benedict, designed many churches for the Archdiocese of Denver. In this one he used Mission Style beams to decorate the vaulted ceiling. The recessed niches for the statues of St. Anthony and the Blessed Mother reinforce the Mission Style, which is otherwise used lightly in this church.
