Boulder High School

-A A +A
1938. Earl Morris, Francis W. Frewen, and Glen H. Huntington. 1604 Arapahoe Ave.

Banded windows and a heroic bas-relief sculpture over the entry distinguish this three-story Streamline Moderne building wrapping an interior courtyard. The exterior masonry is local red quartzite, laid up in an uncoursed ledgerock pattern with concrete trim. Sympathetic additions in the same Lyons sandstone and raw concrete repeat the original angles and curves. The entry panel bas-relief, Strength and Wisdom, by Denver sculptor Marvin Martin, barely survived removal orders from the Boulder school board, which condemned the figures in the composition as “squat, exaggerated, massive and modern.”
