Of perhaps 4,000 diners that sprang up along U.S. roadsides between the 1920s and 1950s, less than 1,000 survive, including two in Jefferson County (see also JF42). Brent Davies built what became one of Lakewood's first designated landmarks in 1989. This chrome home on the range is a fully equipped, stainless steel, 46-ton diner delivered to this site by rail from a New Jersey manufacturer. Inside, the 1950s Deco decor exults in aluminum fixtures; pink, gray, and white formica counters; individual jukebox selectors in each booth; and mirrored walls. Thanks to a life-sized palomino horse on top of the building and a 36-foot-high cowboy chef in a white apron and white hat on the neon sign, this 1950s time capsule is impossible to miss.
