The original strand cottage lots, which extended from Butler Avenue to the beach, have been largely subdivided, and the cottages are only effectively visible from the beach side. They are aligned in a row, separated from the beach by a spacious setback of sand dunes covered in native flora. Individual paths and boardwalks provide beach access, while a common walkway fronting all the cottages connected them with the Tybee Hotel grounds (a view down the walkway can be seen at 13th Street). The cottages vary in ground plan, but all employ a narrow rectangular footprint parallel to their slender lots and are raised a half story on piers, providing ground-level space for partially below-grade servants’ quarters and changing rooms. Some were later raised a full story to accommodate automobiles. Living space on the single raised story is typically covered by a hipped or front-gabled roof with exposed rafter tails. All have ocean-facing porches that typically wrap the south side of the cottage and some include a polygonal gazebolike porch extension on the southeast corner.
