The Back River cottages are best viewed from the beach. Although they are more removed from the resort core, a common boardwalk fronting the beach originally connected them with the final train stop and railroad turnstile at Inlet Avenue. The wood-frame cottages are square in plan and slightly elevated on piers with two stories of living space above. They employ a pyramidal hipped roof with exposed rafter tails. Most of the cottages originally had full wraparound porches on both stories that are now often partially enclosed. The kitchen and dining and service rooms are located on the first story, with a living room and bedrooms on the second. Unlike the Strand cottages, servants’ quarters and bathhouses were located in separate buildings to the rear.
