A popular eatery developed by restaurateurs Herb Traub and Jim Casey in 1945, the original Our House offered homey appeal styled as a Swiss chalet. The new incarnation of Our House, built following the establishment of the Crossroads Shopping Center (1955, Helfrich and Grantham), featured seating for forty in booths and twenty at a counter and was designed for both sit-down and drive-through service. Redwood beams complement Savannah Grey brick and stained glass in a dynamic diamond-shaped structure, arguably Savannah’s best example of Googie architecture and possibly inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Auldbrass Plantation in Yemassee, South Carolina. Closed soon after opening due in part to expenses associated with its construction (Morrison Construction Company was the developer), the building was then occupied by a Savannah Bank and Trust branch office, followed by a Starbucks coffeehouse in 2004. Fine examples of roadside architecture from the 1950s through 1970s exist along Skidaway Avenue both north and south of this building. The Krispy Kreme donut shop (2749 Skidaway Ave.) features the company’s distinctive green-tile cross-gabled roof crowned by a rotating sign, a production wing where visitors can still view donuts being made, and a freestanding sign at the road.
