This primarily African American cemetery has headstones dating back to 1828 when it was a burial ground for slaves and their descendants. The distance between Eugenia Cemetery and Old Church Cemetery off Skidaway Road reveals the full scope of what was once a continuous sequence of vibrant post-Civil War African American towns, which have since been fractured by new development, gentrification, and the Truman Parkway. Old Church Cemetery, along the east side of Skidaway Road just south of Ferguson Avenue, is another historic black cemetery. Built in 1863, and entered via its beautiful wrought-iron gate, this cemetery is named for a Catholic church that used to occupy this site.
