Andrew Low’s business partner, English cotton trader Battersby, built this rare example of a Charleston single house in Savannah, featuring a “false” front door that accesses a two-story side verandah facing a walled side yard and to which the central hall plan is oriented. True to its Charleston spirit, the house does not have an elevated basement in the Savannah manner. The Greek Revival street facade is, by contrast, opaque and severe. The carriage house behind was modified in 1971 to connect it to the main house.
