Sergeant William Jasper Monument

-A A +A
1879–1888, Alexander Doyle, sculptor. Madison Square

With its cornerstone laid on the one hundredth anniversary of the Siege of Savannah in October 1879, Doyle’s colossal bronze statue, dedicated in 1888 in the presence of President Grover Cleveland, commemorates the heroism of William Jasper, who lost his life carrying the American colors in the Battle of Savannah. Adorning the tall granite pedestal are four bronze reliefs cast by the Henry Bonnard Bronze Company in New York City. The statue was cast by the Ames Manufacturing Company in Chicopee, Massachusetts.
