Lindsay House

The George F. Barber Company of Knoxville, Tennessee, published not only pattern books but also a magazine entitled American Homes. Both the numerous editions of Barber's New Model Dwellings and his magazine offered stock plans that could be purchased for a small sum. One design element that Barber seemed to be fond of was a heavy masonry chimney that extends from the corner along the front wall to encompass a large semi-circular window. In addition to this feature, which is displayed in the Lindsay house, there are a number of typical delightful Barber touches in this exuberant Queen Anne design. At the entrance corner is a small extension of the porch which forms an open turreted pavilion; above, another porch, cut into the volume of the house, is set forward of a three-story octagonal tower. While the house has been remodeled and added to as apartments, it still has not lost its original liveliness as a “Victorian” design.
