Located on the neutral ground (median) of St. Roch Avenue, this market offered fruits, vegetables, fish, and meat sold by individual vendors from open stalls. The building’s original materials—iron frame and brick lower walls—have been somewhat modified over the years. In 1914 following a State Board of Health mandate, the market was enclosed with brick walls and windows. Iron columns with inverted bell capitals support the roof, which carries a ridge ventilator with louvered windows. The market was modernized by the WPA in 1937 and the two front bays were removed to provide more space in front. Renovated post–Hurricane Katrina to its 1937 appearance, the market now offers upscale provisions to tourists and neighborhood residents.
