The Harbor and Edgewater

-A A +A
1832–present. Ridgeway Dr., from St. Joseph River Yacht Club to Jean Klock Park

A Lighthouse Service Depot for the Ninth District of the U.S. Lighthouse Service built in 1893 alongside the river now serves as the St. Joseph River Yacht Club. St. Joseph North Pier and inner lights were constructed in 1907 to replace earlier wooden lights that extend into Lake Michigan. Beach houses, office building complexes that replaced old factories, a small retail complex, and a new subdivision exist together here. The mixed-use Harbor Shores Development of residential units, commercial space, a golf course, marinas, and green space proposes to transform the community and create jobs. Preservationists and environmentalists hope development is not at the expense of compromising Jean Klock Park, a public dunes and beach with views of Lake Michigan, which was given to Benton Harbor in 1917.
