MEADVILLA

-A A +A
1808; later alterations; 2017 rehabilitated. 816 U.S. 61 N

Cowles Mead, secretary of the Mississippi Territory, built Meadvilla, which afterward became home to geologist and historian Benjamin L. C. Wailes. The two-story I-house originally had two front entrances; the current single entrance door is mid-twentieth century. The double-tiered front gallery is an early addition. Interior features include gouged-carved cornices and Federal-style mantels.

Between Meadvilla and U.S. 61 is the brick Federal-style Washington Methodist Church (1828; 814 U.S. 61 N), with a front-gabled, three-bay facade, segmental-arched windows, and double-leaf doors with transoms.
