Rainsburg Seminary (Allegheny Male and Female Seminary)
Reminiscent of the Bedford County Courthouse ( BD1), the Rainsburg Seminary employs a similar pedimented gable end with fanlight and cupola above. But in contrast to the columned two-story portico of the courthouse and in keeping with the rural village setting, a one-story full-facade porch shelters the seminary's entrance. The window in the central bay of the second story, with fourpane surrounds, varies from the rest of the double-sash, six-over-six windows. A simple, handsome building set well back from Main Street, the seminary was a teacher's college until the Civil War, and later became the lodge for the International Order of Odd Fellows (No. 777), but is empty as of 2007. The interior features a broad central staircase made of solid oak, which reaches to the small octagonal louvered belfry. Solomon Filler's ancestors settled in Friends Cove in 1792, migrating from Maryland.
