The early Philadelphia and Reading stations were simple and utilitarian in style before the Victorian explosion. This station is based on midcentury Italianate with few exterior grace notes. Within, however, the former men's and women's waiting rooms flank a central space with a fine vaulted ceiling. A dispatch station that stood next door by Frank Furness (1885) has been dramatically altered.
