After the fort closed in 1891, the town of Fort Davis promoted itself to the rest of Texas as a place to beat the summer heat. This house was built by Galveston businessman Henry M. Trueheart, the first real estate credit broker in Texas and a major landowner with holdings statewide. The Trueheart House and the two-story adobe Dr. Jones House (600 W. Court) are among the many substantial cottages built to accommodate summer residents. The adobe and wood Trueheart House is built on a sloping base of rubble stone. A wide gallery wraps the front of the house, connected to a gable-ended porte-cochere. Where gallery and porte-cochere meet, there is a circular gazebo with a conical roof.
