The names of Jackson Ward and Orleans Square reveal the date of their development in June 1815, roughly five months following Andrew Jackson’s victory in the Battle of New Orleans (although several surveyor maps show that Jackson, Brown, and Crawford wards were being planned before the War of 1812). A grand house built in 1820 for Archibald Bulloch to the designs of William Jay occupied the southwest trust lot until it was replaced by the Municipal Auditorium in 1916. Most of the western half of the ward, along with its streets, was replaced by a vast surface parking lot as part of the Civic Center (5.14) urban renewal scheme in 1968–1971.
