Fairfield was first settled in 1839, and from that date to the present it has been the seat of Jefferson County. Fairfield has been a university town since the founding of Parsons College in 1875 (the college is now Maharishi International University). The traditional grid of square blocks with a central courthouse square was platted 2 miles northeast of the Cedar River.
