Kaluakoi is a 6,700-acre resort complex which extends along eight miles of Molokai's western coastline. The resort includes a hotel, three residential condominium complexes, single-family houses, and an 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course designed by Ted Robinson. Unable to attract sufficient guests, the hotel closed in January 2001. Prior to development of the resort, this arid area had been without permanent habitation since at least the early nineteenth century. Fisherman visited the area, and the ruins of their temporary shelters still dot isolated sectors of the landscape. Developed as a joint venture by Molokai Ranch Limited and Louisiana Land and Exploration Company, the resort lands now have several owners.
