Directly opposite the Middlesex County Courthouse stands a row of early mansard dwellings unusual for East Cambridge. Developer S. S. Hazzard's block of seven brick houses came to be known as Quality Row. Although constructed without the typical Boston bowfront, this block does feature brownstone trim and foundations similar to the housing being erected in the South End neighborhood of Boston at the same time. The lintels have incised ornament and round-arched doorways with rope moldings that are more commonly found in Boston neighborhoods than in Cambridge. Unfortunately, the original brownstone was of inferior quality, and most has been replaced with cast stone.
