Lander County Courthouse (Lander County Grammar School)
This structure was originally built as a school, although it looks as if it had been designed as one of Nevada's many Classical Revival courthouses. In 1979, when Lander County government shifted from Austin in central Nevada to Battle Mountain, elected officials sought a dignified setting for their duties. The old school needed only a few minor modifications to serve their purpose well. The one-story brick structure has a full basement rising to a water table. Above this, the facade has five bays on either side of a central portico approached by steps and supported by two pairs of Tuscan columns.
