Conanicut Point Light

On a very truncated piece of what was to have been Conanicut Park's vaunted Bay Shore Drive is the former North Light, now a private residence. The lantern and lens of this light are gone from its squat, square tower, to which is joined the high-gabled, Gothic Revival keeper's cottage, with an entrance stoop fitted to the inside of its L-shaped mass. Although its manner is very much that of the Conanicut Park cottages, it displays as well the stolid sturdiness of government work in the vernacular manner, especially in the breadth of its vaguely Tudorized window frames and possibly in the force of the decorated, openwork bargeboarding of its front-facing gable. In this context, its scroll motif ambiguously calls up vines, dolphins, and waves.
