Fort Pleasant

1832. East side of Hardy County 2, .2 mile southeast of the intersection with U.S. 220

Although portions are said to have been built earlier, the main fabric of this large brick Greek Revival mansion dates from 1832. A tetrastylar, pedimented portico of the Tuscan order, monumental in scale and effective in simplicity, rises two stories at the center of the five-bay facade. Informally arranged wings of various sizes and heights stretch to the left and to the rear. The house stands on the site of Fort Pleasant, one of the chain of frontier forts built in the 1750s under George Washington's direction. The narrow Trough is visible to the north.
