Built for Blacksburg's Catholic congregation, this small granite-clad church was designed by Benedictine monk and architect McInerney. The sturdy parapeted flat-roofed building is a Moderne interpretation of Gothic. Its entrance, defined by fluted buttresses that convey an almost tower-like effect, is flanked by tall narrow windows. The church's corners step back to echo the fluting of the front buttresses. McInerney pursued a notable career as a designer of churches and academic buildings for his religious order, working in a robust Gothic Revival style that changed, later in life, to an austere Moderne-influenced version, as here.
