This one-story, three-room house depicts the lifestyle of a typical miner and his family. A picket fence surrounds a small yard, and the frame house is set on a high foundation. A small front porch, reached by a side stairway, protects the entrance. Originally built in 1916 in the adjacent New River Company town of Sprague, it was moved here in 1991, restored, and furnished as it might have been between 1925 and the 1940s. As company houses continue to disappear throughout coal country, this protected example of a once common genre will continue to increase in significance and interpretive value.
